Dance Intent

The Dance curriculum enables us to develop an understanding of the body and mind, developing an appreciation of our self-worth. We explore movement through critical analysis and practical engagement, building courage, confidence and collaborative skills.

KS3

At KS3 dance and drama are taught on a carousel so students have an hour of Dance a week for three half terms each year. The three skills of performance, choreography and appreciation are taught in every unit of work. In their first half term of the year 7 students take part in the inter-house Performing Arts competition where each tutor group performs a song and dance.  In year 8 students explore dances from around the world; African, Bollywood and break dance. In year 9 students study a professional dance work, dance in musicals and street dance. 

KS4

At KS4 students who choose GCSE Dance have continue to develop the skills of performance, choreography and appreciation.  Students build  their performance skills through dance technique classes and taking part in performances such as the annual school dance show.  Students learn how to choreograph dances creating their own dance pieces.  In appreciation students study two professionals work in depth analysing the various components such as the movement itself, the costume, set, accompaniment etc.

KS5

Students have the opportunity to take a BTEC Subsidiary Diploma in Performing Arts.

Extra-curricular

There are a huge number of extra-curricular opportunities in Dance.  There is a year 7 and 8 dance club, upper school dance club and street dance club that run each week.  We put on an annual dance show, this year we created our own version of Romeo and Juliet.  This year the dance clubs have also performed at a local primary school, in Wandsworth Dance Competition where we came second place and as part of Wandsworth Arts Festival Fringe.  There are also regular theatre trips which this year have included The Scottsborough Boys, Memphis and the Richard Alston Dance Company.
